Starting Early and Helping Young Children Love to Read

One may think that it is impossible to get a child as young as one to love to read; however, there are ways that we as parents can get even these very young children to have a major love for learning. No child is too young. If we do things right, we can instill this love in our very young children by starting early.

Read to the Children from Birth

Many parents think that it is a waste of time to spend time reading to newborns and young babies; however, it is far from a waste at all. When we read to our babies, they can learn how to better speak and learn, and they receive the stimulation they need for successful development. At nap time or at bed time, we should pick a book to read with our children, and we should engage them as much as possible. For newborn infants, we can hold the pictures up to them as we read the story. For babies who are slightly older, we can have them help us to turn the page. The more interaction, the better and the healthier it is for the children’s development.

Purchasing Board Books for the Children

We should purchase board books that have pictures and some words on them. These books are designed for young children. They can play with these books independently, pretend to read to us, and they can feel good about doing this. When they feel like they are playing a part, they will love to learn and read all the more.

Children’s Story Hour

Many local libraries offer children’s story hour. We need to take time out of our day and participate in these events, as they are stimulating for the children and will help them cultivate a love for reading.
